Hopefully Not a Sign of Things to Come

Traffic in downtown D.C. is being rerouted due to a shooting at the Holocaust Museum.

If there's anything such as a "regular" shooting, this ain't it. Blogs, MSNBC, and the American Prospect are reporting the gunman is 88 (or 89) year-old James Wenneker von Brunn.

An 80-something shooter is out of the ordinary from what we hear day to day, but my concern piqued when it was revealed dude has a positive profile on Stormfront (I refuse to link directly to it).

I don't like to think I'm paranoid, but when dude with this profile is walking around your town and I've seen YouTube videos shot by well-groomed Klansmen of black folks walking on The Mall that come off as veiled threats, my mind can't help but wander in that direction.

Not to mention, white supremacists predicted an uptick in ranks due to the Obama presidency and the political right went ape isht over the notion that the government was monitoring groups such as those the shooter belonged to (of course they forgot eco terrorists et al. were on the list, too).

Talk me down, people. Please.

UPDATE: Can't talk you down, Jacarl. This is a report from Fox. From FOX!

This is tragic. But before I give Fox News credit, I a mnoticing a pattern in their coverage. They often cover a crazy person (like reading this e mail), and the hosts condemn the letter or guest. But you must note that Fox is the only network even voicing the opinion or view to begin with. Fox is the ONLY network reading these aburdist opinions over the airwaves, or allowing such hate speakers to defend their views on the air.

If you think I'm making this up, note that FOX News was the only network to give credence in the form of an interview to "Pastor" James David Manning, aka that "asshole from ATLAH". On Hannity and Colmes, Manning restaed and vehemently defended his claims that then-candidate Obama was "born trash" and was the product of "a white trash woman" and and "African in-heat father". Of course Hannity tried to take him to task, but Fox gave the man an audience. Certainly other netowrks were aware of Manning, for last summer he became something of a viral celebrity. But Fox aired him.

Secondly, look at Fox's election night coverage, in which they interviewed the completely irrelevant Ralph Nader. Nader said that Obama had a chance to be a champion of the poor, or he would prove himself "an Uncle Tom". Yep, on air. Shepard Smith and his gang balsted Nader, sure, but they let him say it, didn't cut off the interview, and let him say it several more times in defense of his initial comments. Then in the following days Fox replayed over and over the asinine comments by the irrelevant guy, in an attempt to ostensibly praise themselves for blasting him. Surely other networks saw the Nader exchange, but they dind't rebroadcast it because htey knew it was hate speech coming from an irrelevant jerk. Not only did Fox allow Nader to dig inafter making the comments, but they continually rebroadcasted it.

Sorry for the long post, but my point is that in the clip posted here, Fox has taken another opportunity to give a legitimizing medium to the animus and foolishness that is out there. And they are consistently the only significant network to do so.

Second the opinion. Madness has always walked among us. That's nothing new. Fox will be Fox, so their giving voice to the mad isn't really surprising.
