my reaction to a funny piece on another show is usually just "that joint was funny" or "damn, they pulled that off"
we're all just practitioners in the same peculiar trade, end of the day
also, its rare to want to jump shows as you tend to grow close to the show you work with
and also still, we know and chill with writers from other shows all the time. the comedy world is a lot like the music world...people hang out and get drinks all the time, so we know who's a dick, who's brilliant, who has a great staff, etc
and cats are quick to give props to one another
when we heard that Robert Smigel of SNL fame (a legend) enjoyed one of our pieces, it meant something...that dude created Triumph the Insult Comic Dog!

hahah good stuff!
This made me think: when you guys, as late night writers see something like this bit, does it make you
wish you had thought of it?
Get motivated to step your bit game up?
wish you worked at/aspire to work at that show?
do you immediately recognize the material as part of some formulaic rubric that the average viewer doesn't recignize?
I'm fascinated to know your thoughts when watching other shows.

I can't wait until Jimmy gets that comfortable.
Smigel is the man without a doubt, but I never liked Triumph.
Triumph's great, but he did rip it off from Ed the Sock on MuchMusic -even if he's generally funnier.
